It’s been recommended that I include fortified dairy foods in my diet, but I can’t seem to find many options in the supermarket?
In Australia, food manufacturers can choose to add vitamin D to certain foods, but it's not commonly added to dairy products, which can make fortified options harder to find.
Vitamin D deficiency affects a significant portion of the population. Most of our vitamin D comes from sunlight and it can be difficult to get enough vitamin D naturally through food.
Because of this, food regulation in Australia allows manufacturers to add vitamin D to certain foods if they choose to, provided they follow the permitted levels and labelling requirements. However, unlike other countries like the US where vitamin D is routinely added to many dairy foods, it’s not as common in Australia so that’s why it can be tricky to find fortified dairy options at the supermarket.
To check if a product has been fortified with vitamin D, check out the nutrition information panel and ingredients list. Other Vitamin D rich food sources include oily fish, eggs and UV-light exposed mushrooms. If you're still not getting enough, vitamin D supplements are also an option.
