Healthy Bones Action Week
Celebrate Healthy Bones Week annually in August
Dairy’s annual Healthy Bones Action Week in August inspires Australians to take action to protect their bones—starting today, for a stronger tomorrow.
Bones stop growing by the age of 18, but peak bone density isn't reached until our late 20s. That means dairy foods that you eat at a young age shapes your bone health for life. Consuming calcium-rich dairy like milk, cheese and yoghurt during young adulthood is critical for strong bones and reducing the risk of osteoporosis later in life.
Despite these facts, a survey by Dairy Australia found that 18–25-year-olds aren't often prioritising bone health. Nearly 90% of young women recognise its importance, yet it ranks lowest among their health concerns, with most unaware of their daily dairy needs.*
So how much dairy do you really need? Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend 2.5 servings for adults aged 18-50. That’s just a couple of slices of cheese, a small tub of yoghurt and a glass of milk. Simple, right?
*Omnibus research – Calcium intake in men and women aged between 18-25 years old, conducted by Lewers on behalf of Dairy Australia, between 12-16 June 2024, survey sample size of 387.
