About Australian Dairy

Discover Australian Dairy

From early morning milking to feeding calves and keeping cows happy, Aussie dairy farmers do it all. Explore life on the farm, how milk is made and the people (and animals!) who make it all happen.

The Australian dairy industry began in New South Wales – but today, it stretches across the country.

It’s now the third-largest rural industry in Australia, after red meat and wheat and plays a key role in our agricultural economy.

Have you ever wondered where the milk in your fridge begins its journey? It often starts with a passionate farmer, a friendly cow and a sunrise over a green paddock.

Right now, there are about 3,800 dairy farms in Australia and around 1.3 million dairy cows. These cows make about 8 billion litres of milk every year. That’s enough to fill over 3,000 Olympic swimming pools!

That milk is then turned into all kinds of tasty products like yoghurt, butter, cheese, cream and of course, ice cream!

Milk and dairy products made in Australia are enjoyed both here and in other countries. Australia sends about 32% of its milk to trade partners like China, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia.
