How many litres of milk does each dairy cow produce per day?
Dairy cows in Australia produce an average of 16 litres of milk per day.
Of course, every dairy cow is different, but each cow in Australia produces about 16 litres of milk per day on average. With around 1.3 million cows across 3,800 farms, that adds up to a massive 8 billion litres of milk every year.
Before joining the milking herd, a cow goes through several life stages. After birth, she’s reared on milk and feed until weaning at two – four months, then she moves to pasture to graze and grow. She’s typically mated at 15 – 18 months and calves at around two years old – only then does she join the milking herd.
