Flavoured milk is made by adding ingredients like syrups, fruit purees or flavour extracts to fresh milk, then blending it into a creamy, chilled treat!
Flavoured milk starts with fresh milk collected from local dairy farms. First, the milk is standardised so the fat and solids are at the right levels for a consistent product. Next comes the fun part: flavour!
Flavours are added differently depending on what they are: chocolate usually comes from cocoa powder or chocolate syrup, strawberry often uses fruit puree or flavour extracts and iced coffee varieties are made with brewed coffee or coffee concentrate - just a few examples of the many flavours out there!
Some varieties also have added sugars or other sweeteners, and stabilisers may be added to keep everything creamy and prevent separation.
After blending, the milk is pasteurised and homogenised. These heat treatments knock out microbes to keep the milk fresh for longer and extend its shelf life. Homogenisation also helps the fat and flavour stay evenly mixed and easy to shake back together.
The milk is then packaged and chilled, ready to enjoy as a tasty treat!
