Does cheese contain lactose?

Natural cheeses contain minimal amounts of lactose because during the cheese making process most of the lactose is removed when the curds are separated from the whey (containing most of the lactose).

According to the Australian Dietary Guidelines, people with lactose intolerance can generally eat cheese, as most types of cheese are very low in lactose. The following table lists the lactose content of various dairy foods including cheese.
