Why do some farmers euthanise healthy male calves?

Some farmers euthanise male calves, known as bobby calves, due to logistical challenges, like long distances to abattoirs, where they would otherwise be sent for veal or leather production.

On a dairy farm, more calves are born than are required for milk production, and the majority of these are male calves, often referred to as bobby calves. These calves are typically not needed for the milking herd and are sent to a saleyard or abattoir at five days of age or older.

At the abattoir, bobby calves are often used for veal in food products, or their hides are used for leather goods.

However, in cases where farms are located long distances from abattoirs, some farmers may choose to euthanise bobby calves. This is because there are regulations governing how long bobby calves can travel to ensure their welfare during transport.
