What is Lactobacillus?
Lactobacillus is a type of "friendly" bacteria found in your digestive system and in fermented foods like yoghurt. It helps with digestion, supports gut health, and can even ease symptoms of lactose intolerance.
Lactobacillus is a special type of bacteria that can be amazing for the body. When this mighty bacteria feeds on carbohydrates, it produces lactic acid through a process called fermentation (which is why it’s commonly found in fermented foods like yoghurt, kefir, and cultured drinks!)
Lactobacillus is a probiotic, which means it’s a live bacterium that, in the right amounts, can help keep your gut in balance. Your gut is home to trillions of microorganisms, collectively called the gut microbiota.1 When this delicate ecosystem is balanced, it aids digestion and can even give your immune system a boost.2
What makes Lactobacillus extra special is its ability to help break down lactose, the natural sugar in dairy foods. Studies have shown that people with lactose intolerance who take Lactobacillus supplements often experience fewer symptoms, such as cramping or nausea, compared to those who don’t.3
Fermented dairy products like yoghurt are a fantastic way to get Lactobacillus into your diet. The combination of carbs, protein, and fat in milk acts as a natural shield, helping probiotics survive the harsh conditions in your stomach so they can reach your gut.
So, when you enjoy yoghurt or other fermented dairy products, you’re doing your gut a favour. With each bite or sip, you’re supporting digestion and giving your overall health a little boost. How good is that?
