Is Bovaer® being used on Australian dairy farms?

No – currently, there are no known instances of Bovaer® being used on Australian dairy farms.

Bovaer® is a feed additive for cattle that helps reduce the amount of methane they release into the atmosphere. It works by inhibiting an enzyme in the cow’s stomach that is responsible for methane production.

Developed by DSM-Firmenich, Bovaer® has been approved for use in over 65 countries, including Australia, and has been thoroughly assessed overseas for food and consumer safety.

In Australia, while Bovaer® has been trialled in beef feedlots, its supply remains limited for the dairy industry. High costs and logistical challenges have meant it is not currently in use on Australian dairy farms.

The Australian dairy industry remains committed to maintaining the highest food safety standards. Any new technologies, including feed additives like Bovaer®, must meet strict regulatory requirements to ensure the safety, quality, and sustainability of our milk and dairy products.

Australian dairy farmers continue to explore ways to lower their environmental footprint while ensuring milk remains safe, nutritious, and trusted by consumers.
