How much calcium is in ice cream?
Ice cream contains a small amount of calcium, but not as much as milk, cheese and yoghurt.
As ice cream is made from milk, it naturally contains calcium.
A 100g serve of ice cream contains around 50mg of calcium.
Ice cream is however classified as a 'discretionary food' in the Australian Dietary Guidelines, meaning we should limit our intake as it can be high in energy and low in essential nutrients.
Calcium requirements are best met by eating Five Food Group foods, like milk cheese and yoghurt. These foods are rich in nutrients and contain a much higher amount of calcium compared to ice cream. For example, a 100g serve of yoghurt contains around 177mg of calcium.
