How fairly are the farmers really treated by the big corporations, are they getting paid correctly/not being taken advantage of?
A mandatory code of conduct between farmers and processors has been established to ensure farmers are treated fairly by big corporations.
Most companies take care of their suppliers, it's in their best interests. There are more than 130 different organisations buying milk from Australian dairy farmers and many of the largest collectors are indeed 'big corporations'. The ACCC recently completed its Inquiry into the Australian dairy industry that investigated the relationship between farmer and processor and also processor and retailer. One of the recommendations of this report was a mandatory code of conduct between farmers and processors to be established. A mandatory code covering nine principles to increase fairness and transparency between dairy farmers and processors has been detailed on the Department of Agriculture website.
