TECHNICAL SUPPORT OFFICER
Technical Support Officers assist scientists in the study of physical, chemical,
biological or life sciences. They collect and prepare samples, carry out experiments,
make measurements with scientific equipment, record and present results for critical
analysis.
Technical Support Officers perform the following tasks:
- Collect, classify and preserve specimens and samples
- Inspect and test animals and plants for diseases
- Carry out experimental procedures such as taking animal blood samples, testing
seed and experimental plants, analysing soil and monitoring processes such as
fermentation
SCOPE:
Technical Support Officers can work with:
- Genetic Scientists
- Chemical Manufacturers
- Animal/Plant Researchers
- Seed and Fertilizer suppliers
- Departments of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) and Agriculture or
Primary Industries
- CSIRO
COURSES AND TRAINING:
The minimum qualifications needed will depend on the level of skill required for
the job. Generally, an advanced certificate is needed for employment as a Technical
Support Officer.
Completion of an associate diploma level course is needed
for employment as a senior Technical Support Officer.Certificates are available
from various TAFE institutes.
