MICROBIOLOGIST
Microbiologists study micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses and fungi, to increase
scientific knowledge and develop veterinary, industrial, environmental and other
practical applications.
Microbiologists may perform the following tasks:
- Monitor the quality of raw milk to finished product
- Advise production staff on the interpretation of microbiological tests
- Undertake research into the effects of micro-organisms on food manufacture,
processing and quality control
- Prepare scientific reports and papers
SCOPE:
Microbiologists have been employed in food and dairy manufacturing companies, in
industrial microbiology which includes the production by micro-organisms of foods,
various chemicals, antibiotics, enzymes, as well as vaccine manufacture.
COURSES AND TRAINING:
For entry to this occupation, completion of a degree with a major study in
microbiology is required. For entry to research positions, completion of a
postgraduate qualification, such as a Masters Degree or Doctorate of Philosophy,
would normally be required. Successful completion of Year 12 is required for
entry to degree courses. Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology are a requirement
for undergraduate courses at most universities.
