ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST
Environmental Scientists measure and record features of the environment and study,
assess and develop methods of controlling or minimising the harmful effects of human
and animal activity on the environment.
Environmental Scientists perform the following tasks:
- Plan and conduct research into the physical and biological nature of the
environment
- Take part in response to emergencies such as chemical spills and accidents
- Conduct research and prepare proposals to lessen the impact of agriculture on
the environment
SCOPE:
Environmental Scientists can work for organisations like:
- Departments of Natural Resources and Environment, Agriculture or Primary
Industries
- Local Councils
- Environment Protection Authority (EPA)
- Catchment Management Authorities
- Private consulting firms
where they can assist in the work and development between farms and the community at
large.
COURSES AND TRAINING:
Entry to this occupation requires a Bachelor of Science or Applied Science degree.
Postgraduate qualifications are becoming highly desirable. Satisfactory completion of
Year 12, including English and other prerequisite studies, are required for entry to
degree courses.
