DAIRY TECHNOLOGIST
Dairy Technologists cover a range of jobs, from operating automated equipment to
developing new food products and setting standards for producing, packaging and
marketing food technologies.
Dairy Technologists may perform the following tasks:
- Ensure hygienic conditions and procedures are maintained and followed during the
processing and packaging of food and that food is stored under proper conditions
until processed
- Test both raw ingredients and processed food for nutritional value and
microbiological quality, and check foods for colour, taste and flavour
- Develop new products
- Operation of manufacturing equipment to ensure products meet customer
requirements
SCOPE:
Opportunities for Dairy Technologists occur with dairy manufacturing companies and
marketing boards. Other opportunities include advisory and control work in the
processing and distribution of dairy products, the analysis of dairy products,
teaching and research.
COURSES AND TRAINING:
Entry to this career may be at the professional or the technical level. Food
Technology courses are available at diploma and degree level. Employment and
promotion opportunities may be enhanced by higher qualifications.
