PROFILE OF A LABORATORY MICROBIOLOGIST
Growing up on a dairy farm in Northern Victoria, I completed my high-school studies
at Mooroopna Secondary College. At the end of school I was unsure of a career path,
however knowing that I did not mind maths and science at school, I initially decided
to study Science as a tertiary qualification to keep my options open.
Finding biology and chemistry to be my strengths at university, I decided to major
in Microbiology, which has been pivotal in my career so far.
After completing my Science degree, I commenced work for Bonlac in a laboratory. This
job required a person with microbiological skills and a knowledge of the dairy
industry. From there I joined Nestle as a microbiologist.
I am currently in the role of Factory Hygienist, where I am involved in Food Safety,
Hygienic Food Production, Pest Control and facilitating projects such as Hygienic
Design and Good Manufacturing Practices.
Since joining the company three years ago, my role has developed considerably due to
Nestle's strong stance on the attendance of professional developments.
I see the Australian dairy industry as remaining competitive on the world markets
because of its reputation providing good clean milk products for consumption, whilst
maintaining its ability to keep costs at a minimum.
Investment in technologies will ensure that the dairy industry is able to stay well
placed with value added products and services.
