ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION TECHNICIAN
A professional Artificial Insemination (AI) Technician provides an insemination service
to dairy cattle for those farmers who want access to a larger pool of genetics than using
one or two bulls. The successful AI Technician properly handles and thaws frozen semen
and practices insemination techniques to produce optimum results for each customer.
Many AI organisations offer refresher courses in these areas to keep the technician up
to date on correct procedures.
SCOPE:
Professional AI Technicians are key people in the herd improvement organisation's
marketing efforts because they are in direct contact with the customers. They are
often asked for advice on which bulls to use and therefore need to be knowledgeable
about the bulls available.
COURSES AND TRAINING:
To become a Professional AI Technician, it's best to gain employment with a Herd
Improvement Co-operative and from there complete the Professional AI Accreditation.
You can also qualify as an AI Technician which enables you to inseminate your own dairy
herd or that of your employer's. To do this, you need to attend a four-day DIY (Do It
Yourself) course designed to give plenty of insemination practice, which is the key to
becoming a proficient inseminator.
