PROFILE OF AN EXTENSION SPECIALIST
Ruth grew up in the city but wanted a career that was different - not a desk job.
Initially preferring veterinary science, she chose Rural Science, completing a four
year degree at the University of New England, Armidale, NSW.
Following graduation, Ruth moved to Tasmania, working in the Tasmanian government sector
in dairy extension and advisory work. "I hadn't predicted that I would work in the
dairy industry - or move to Tasmania - but this combination proved very rewarding:
enhancing my career, offering more training opportunities and allowing me to move into
dairy extension program management. I was even able to work on a short term job exchange
in New Zealand "
Ruth is now progressing her career in the dairy industry through PhD research looking at
management processes on large farms, particularly issues involving employment of labour.
She is also involved in short term consultancies, mainly with a dairy flavour.
"The dairy industry has been an excellent vehicle for my career so far - and I don't see
the possibilities ending."
