JOURNALIST
Journalists write and edit news reports, commentaries and features for newspapers,
magazines and radio or television stations. Journalists who work for large commercial
organisations and government departments produce annual reports, prepare speeches and
write media releases.
Journalists may perform the following tasks:
- Gather news and information by interviewing people and covering events
- Undertake research to provide background information for articles
- Write speeches and prepare media releases
SCOPE:
Journalists involved in the dairy industry work on metropolitan, suburban and country
newspapers and on periodicals such as quarterly, monthly and weekly magazines,
technical journals, reviews, web sites, trade and technical papers. Others work in
radio and television, and as public relations officers in companies. A number work on
a freelance basis.
COURSES AND TRAINING:
School leavers, having completed Year 12 may serve a 3 year cadetship where they
receive instruction and gain experience in practical journalism under the supervision
of senior journalists. They also study some form of speed-writing, key-boarding if
necessary and computer operating including visual data terminal sub-editing. Many
Journalists study a specific area, for example, agriculture and then go into
journalism.
