DIETITIAN/NUTRITIONIST
Dietitians/Nutritionists apply the science of human nutrition to help individuals,
groups and communities select food to attain, maintain and promote health.
Dietitians/Nutritionists are trained to provide a wide range of professional
services.
Dietitians/Nutritionists may perform the following tasks:
- Collect and assess data relating to the nutritional health of individuals,
groups and communities
- Counsel individuals on appropriate diets and the planning and preparation
of food
- Develop and administer food and nutrition policies for government industry,
health institutions and other organisations
SCOPE:
Most Dietitians/Nutritionists in the dairy industry work for support organizations such as Australian Dairy Corporation or larger manufacturing companies. A smaller number of Dietitians are also employed by universities and government departments in the areas of research and teaching.
COURSES AND TRAINING:
Entry to this occupation usually requires that the minimum national standard be met by
successfully completing a 4 year integrated Bachelor Degree or a 3 year Bachelor of
Science Degree, including units in Biochemistry and Human Physiology, and a
postgraduate course in dietetics and nutrition.
