DAIRY FARM MANAGER
The Dairy Farm Owner / Share Farmer has the primary responsibility to ensure that the
dairy farm enterprise is successfully managed. The responsibilities of this position
include:
- Business planning, monitoring and evaluation
- Staff management and safety
- Management of the production system
- Quality management and control
- Financial management
- Milk production and animal health
- Whole farm planning
- Live stock breeding
The Dairy Farm Manager may be employed in some enterprises to manage some of the above
activities or to manage specialised areas of the farm such as:
- Herd health and nutrition
- Pasture and feeding systems
- Milk harvesting
SCOPE:
As farms grow in size, there will be increasing opportunities in the share farming and
farm management areas.
COURSES AND TRAINING:
As the complexity of dairy farming increases, Dairy Farm Owners/Managers/Share Farmers
require a broader range of knowledge, skills and experience. Specialist Managers and
Share Farmers may have completed an Apprenticeship in Agriculture (Dairy) or a
diploma/degree course through TAFE or a college or university. Specialist dairy and
rural business management training programs are available on a full-time or part-time
basis.
