CHEMICAL ENGINEER

Chemical engineers work across the manufacturing sector of the industry in many roles.

These include:

  • Optimization of processes
  • Development of new products and processes
  • Operation of processes in a safe, efficient and environmentally sustainable manner
  • Reclamation of materials eg detergents, water, condensate
  • Preparation of feasibility studies for new or modified processes.

Sometimes their roles are described as Process Engineers or Process Technologists.

SCOPE:

Chemical engineers are found in many positions from operation and supervision of processes, design and commissioning of new plant or increasing production efficiencies. They may work with manufacturing companies, research organizations, consultants or equipment supply companies. People wishing to progress to management roles will need to consider further study in business management.

COURSES AND TRAINING:

To become a Chemical Engineer, you need to complete a degree in Chemical Engineering. Entry to these programs requires completion of year 12 or equivalent in English, Chemistry, Mathematics and/or Physics.

The dairy industry has a Graduate Orientation program to assist new engineering graduates entering the industry.
