MOTOR MECHANIC
Motor mechanics service, repair and overhaul the mechanical parts of motor vehicles
such as the engine, the transmission (clutch, gear box and differential), and the
suspension systems (springs, steering, brakes, wheels and tires).
Motor mechanics may perform these tasks:
- Discuss problems with vehicle operators to discover faults, listen to engines,
fit and operate special test equipment and test drive vehicles
- Repair or replace worn and faulty parts by removing assemblies such as engines,
transmissions, differentials or steering gear
- dismantle and check parts, referring to manuals as necessary
- Use a range of welding equipment
SCOPE:
Motor Mechanics can work in all areas of the dairy industry. Within the processing
and manufacturing sector of the industry, mechanics are required to service and
maintain tankers used in fresh milk collection and vehicles used to transport
products to warehouses or customers.
COURSES AND TRAINING:
Entry to this job usually requires the completion of an apprenticeship. Employers
prefer applicants who have completed Year 10 or the equivalent. Employers in private
industry usually require a minimum of Year 11 standard and due to the rapid advance
of new technology, many are now asking for completion of the VCE with passes in the
appropriate practical subjects.
