PROFILE OF A HERD MANAGER
Shelly is herd manager responsible for the management of 300 cows. This role covers
herd health, nutrition, pregnancy testing and raising replacement stock. She has
several staff working with her and plans their training programs to ensure they are
confident with their work.
Shelly grew up on a sheep and beef farm. She wanted to work with animals, so applied for
a job on a dairy farm. Her then employer encouraged her to commence a traineeship with
Goulburn Ovens TAFE. She says this training gave her new skills and experiences that have
provided the foundation for her career in the industry.
Shelly was awarded the Trainee of the Year for the Northern Region. This resulted in her
spending several weeks in New Zealand studying their dairy industry.
Shelly comments that you don't have to come from a farming background to be successful.
You just need to be enthusiastic and keen to learn about new ideas and how they can
assist to improve the farm business. Shelly has recently qualified for the Diploma of
Agriculture through recognition of the skills and knowledge she has obtained through her
work.
